In October 1949, the Lake Stevens Lions Club was chartered as a service club.
Some early accomplishments were installing lights on the High School football
field, raising funds for a kidney dialysis machine, and helping those in our
community needing assistance.
The first “Lion of the Year” was presented to Merle West in 1960. Merle
was a tireless worker in Lions, working on every project. The award has
continued every year since then. A committee made up of past recipients meet to
select the next winner. The basis for being chosen is contribution to Lionism,
community involvement, and willingness to serve his/her neighbor and stranger as
the need arises.
